The Ndebele pattern is a brightly colored motif traditionally painted on houses as a form of coded communication between the South African Ndebele people. Created to transmit messages during times of war and strife, the pattern still functions as a visual language, and is still only painted by women. A Ndebele house mural  might announce a wedding, warn off an evil spirit, or spread some juicy gossip. Esther Mahlangu, a Ndebele artist, was commissioned by BMW in 1991 to customize this 525i.
